Emile Durkheim, 1858-1917, the founding father of sociology.

In his book The Rules of the Sociological Method (1895), Durkheim defines the object of the new discipline he wants to found as the social fact. He defines it as a “way of acting, thinking and feeling” external to the individual and which imposes itself on him.
